Sri Lanka cricketers celebrate the fall of yet another Pakistan batter in the second game of the Grameenphone tri-nation women's cricket tournament at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra yesterday. PHOTO: BANGLARCHOKH.COM

Sri Lanka got off to a sound start in the Grameenphone women's tri-nation cricket tournament when they handed a three-wicket defeat to Pakistan in a low-scoring match at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra yesterday.

Sri Lankan bowlers led by player-of-the-match Chamani Seneviratne did an excellent job as Pakistan, who won their first game against hosts Bangladesh by seven wickets, were bundled out for 103 in 41.5 overs after being sent into bat.

New-ball bowler Seneviratne claimed three wickets for 26 runs to cause an early damage while Chamari Polgampola, Sripali Weerakkody, Hiruka Fernando, Sashikala Siriwardane and Suvini de Alwis took one wicket each.

Pakistan were able to cross the hundred-run mark because of the efforts from tail-enders Arman Khan (25) and Almas Akram (19).

Middle-order batswomen Sana Mir (15) and Javeria Khan (11) were the other batters to reach double digits.

In reply, Sri Lanka made a poor start when Asmavia Iqbal removed opener Polgampala with the scoreboard reading eight, but Dedunu de Silva and Hiruka repaired the early damage with 31 runs for the second wicket.

Javeria and Almas equally shared six wickets to shake the Sri Lanka middle-order, but the Lankans still reached the target losing seven wickets in 30.4 overs.

Dedunu de Silva scored 19 runs off 32 balls with three fours while one-down Hiruka made 23 off 32 balls that featured three boundaries.

Skipper Sashikala (10), Suvini de Alwis (17) and Eshani Kaushalya (16 not out) were the other notable scorers for the Islanders.

Sri Lanka will play their second match against hosts Bangladesh tomorrow at the same venue.

Morteza Creates a Sensation in IPL (with Asraful)

IPL 2009 Auction: Mortaza creates a sensation

06-February-2009

DHAKA : In the most sensational bidding for a player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction today (Friday) in Goa, Bangladesh fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a price of US$ 600,000. Mortaza’s bidding had started with a base price of US$ 50000 but his figures kept climbing steadily with the Kings XI Punjab hot on the heels of the Knight Riders before the Kolkata side roped him for 12 times his starting price.
“Obviously I am delighted because I feel this is a result of all the hard work I have put in over the years and also a reward for being consistent this season. I would have been a lot happier if Shakib (Al Hasan) had got a team because he truly deserved it for his sensational form with the bat and ball,” said Mortaza.
“I have lots of friends and fans in India and that’s why I am excited. I love being there and it is a pleasure to play in India. Kolkata is just next door and I know how much people there admire Bangladeshi cricketers. The auction is over now and my challenge is to go over there and prove my worth.” Mortaza's purchase sparked a buzz in the auction room. The bidding, initially in segments of US$ 10,000 each, lasted nearly half-an-hour before Punjab gave in. "It makes great sense for Kolkata," IPL chairman Lalit Modi said. "Bangladesh falls under the Kolkata's catchment area as per a new proposal we are discussing on letting franchises stage matches overseas. This could work well for KKR later."
Ashraful in IPL:
There was further good news for the Bangladeshis with Tigers skipper Mohammad Ashraful snapped by Mumbai Indians at his base price of US$ 75,000 in the second round after most teams had exhausted their 10-player quota of foreign players.
Ashraful said that Mortaza’s value and the fact that two players from Bangladesh have been picket from an intense bidding was an encouraging sign for Bangladesh cricket.
The Bangladesh captain also revealed that signing for Mumbai Indians would allow him to realize a childhood dream.
“It’s no secret that Sachin Tendulkar has been an idol for me and as a youngster I dreamt of playing alongside Sachin some day and now we are in the same team.”
Other's New Details:

Surprisingly Tigers star Shakib Al Hasan, the world’s number one ranked all-rounder in ODIs did not get a buyer. Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal, the other Bangladeshi cricketer in the auction, also remained unsold.
The prices are for each year of two-year contracts. Last season the teams had to sign contracts for three years at bid prices. The cricketers will get paid on a prorata basis depending on their availability for the duration of the six-week tournament. The 2009 IPL season will be held from April 10 to May 29.

The 25-year-old, number eight in the ICC ODI rankings for bowlers, was relishing the opportunity to play in Kolkata.

Shakib missing out was a bit of a shock because he is one player who has dominated in both forms of international cricket this season. But I guess luck is also a factor in auctions. Nevertheless I am very happy for Mash (Mortaza) as he been outstanding day in and day out for us. It is also positive for our cricket that two of us have been chosen after stiff competition.”

England stars Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff were sold for US$ 1.55 million each making them the highest-paid cricketers in the Twenty20 competition.

The other attractions of the auction were JP Duminy, the South African batsman, who was bagged by Mumbai for US$ 950,000 (base price: US$ 300,000), and most unexpectedly, Tyron Henderson, the uncapped South African all-rounder who was bought by Rajasthan Royals for US$ 650,000, which was over six times his base price of US$ 100,000.

Seventeen players were up for grabs in the IPL auction that lasted two hours.

Ashraful retained as Captain

Ashraful retained as captain

07-February-2009

The following important decisions have been taken at the 4th Meeting of the BCB Board of Directors held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur today (Saturday).

1. The Board decided that Mohammad Ashraful will remain captain of the Bangladesh National Team until the end of Bangladesh’s Tour of the West Indies in July-August 2009. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will continue as the Team’s Vice Captain.

“We had also considered Mortaza in terms of seniority and Mushfiqur Rahim for his maturity as prospective candidates for the captaincy. Both are captaining their respective club sides in the Dhaka Premier League this season and the Board wants to give them more time to grow in the role. Their captaincy in the Premier League will be monitored and observed by the Board,” said BCB Media & Communications Committee Chairman Mohammed Jalal Yunus.

2. Review of players’ contracts and salaries is under process and the Board expects to come to a decision on the issue within a month.

3. Ticket sales proceeds from the benefit match (1st match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in the Grameenphone Tri-Nation Cup) for the Late Manzural Islam Rana has come to Taka 7,00,000.00 plus which will be handed over to Rana’s family.

4. The Board has instructed the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) to include left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak in the national Player’s Pool for the 2008-09 Dhaka League Season.

5. The Board decided to set up a Welfare Trust with an initial deposit of Taka 36 lac. Taka 26 lac will come from the BCB Sundries Fund and the rest Taka 10 lac will be generated from bat sale proceeds. Also five percent of the royalty from sponsors would be deposited in the Welfare Fund. The Trust’s beneficiaries would include current and former players, scorers and umpires, organizers and BCB staff members.

The Media & Communications Committee Chairman also informed that the Board saw a presentation from Bangladesh Coach Jamie Siddons on the team’s progress and the coach’s plans for the future. “One of the key features of the presentation was Shakib Al Hasan’s transformation with the bat over the last year. The coach showed us Shakib’s backlift when he (Siddons) first came in and his present state which is more technically correct and allows him to play shots more comfortably and freely.”

“We asked the coach about why Ashraful, Tamim Iqbal and Zunaed Siddique were not making runs and he assured us that he was working with the three batsmen and we will see positive results soon,” said Yunus.

Citycell B League

Amalesh wants it now:

Abahani coach Amalesh Sen said he would go for the kill against Sheikh Russel in today's B. League match to ensure that the professional league trophy stays in Dhanmondi.

With the defending champions and the runaway league leaders, on 44 points from 18 games, needing just one point from the remaining two matches to seal the championship, the Abahani veteran added that he does not want to wait 12 more days to lay his hands on the silverware.

"I know we need just one point but we are eyeing the maximum from our remaining matches. Tomorrow is a big match and anything can happen. As our next game is far away, we don't want any waiting," said Amalesh yesterday.

Abahani, who rest next week, will meet Rahmatganj in their last match on February 17 but they would line up today for their fourth game inside 12 days.

Having won their last seven matches in a row, the Sky-Blues will definitely start as favourites to pick up at least one point if not more against Wajed Gazi's men, who are now nine points adrift of the leaders with a game more to play.

"I know we beat them convincingly (3-0) in the first leg but Russel are desperate because if they can beat us, it would open up hopes for them to come back in the title race. They also have players like Alfaz, who has notched 14 goals this season.

Their new foreign recruits are also playing well, so it would not be easy for us," said former Bangladesh international Amalesh, whose only worry was a half fit Mamunul Islam in the midfield.

Mamun appeared in the latter stage of their last match against Muktijoddha but is still a doubtful starter while midfield stalwart Joy, who was another second-half substitute, has recovered enough to get back in the starting eleven.

Russel coach Gazi, however, believed that Abahani are the only team in the title race.

"We went on the backfoot after the draws against Mohammedan and Brothers. In fact we are now fighting with Mohammedan for the second spot," said Gazi dismissing Russel's slim hopes of finishing atop the table.

Russel's failure to beat any of the remaining top three this season and recruiting an entirely new set of foreign players in the mid-season break have perhaps hampered their campaign, if not the club officials' reported interference on team selection bypassing the coach.

"We don't have any other option but to win all our matches but even if we do that, we can't catch Abahani if they get just one point. In my long career, I have never seen any team in this position to spill from such a comfortable position.

"Abahani will definitely start in a better position and their morale would also be high after beating Mohammedan 2-1 and crushing Brothers 3-0 in their last three matches.

"We are also going to miss Alfaz's strike partner Samir Omari, who is suspended for tomorrow's game," informed Gazi, the senior most coach in the domestic circuit, adding that he has not a proper replacement.

Omari, who has scored five goals in as many appearances, also picked up three bookings and Russel will have to field only two foreigners in Serbian Marco Maric and Moroccan Al Moujahid as Moroccan midfielder Ahmad Reda has left.

ICL -Indian Cricket League: Makes Top Bangladesh Cricketers Resign National Team

ICL [Indian Cricket League] Makes Top Bangladesh Cricketers Resign National Team:
14 Bangladesh players including former captain Habibul Bashar are set to sign a contract with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL).Bashar, Mohammad Rafique, Alok Kapali, Shahriar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed, Nazim Uddin, Farhad Reza and Dhiman Ghosh are among the players who will join the ICL this week, reported the Dhaka-based Bengali national daily 'Prothom Alo'.

Kapali, Reza and Dhiman were in the Bangladesh squad that played a three-match one-day series against Australia earlier this month. ICL which has not been sanctioned by the BCCI has already drawn a lot of attention with some of the top international players taking a plunge into it at the cost of international cricket. Players participating in the league have been banned from playing international cricket by their respective national Boards. In a significant move six Bangladesh players including fomer captain Habibul Bashar, resigned from the national team on Sunday Former captain Habibul Bashar, along with .....

Shariar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed, Mosharraf Hossain, Farhad Reza and Dhiman Ghosh - who all have contracts with the Bangladesh Cricket Board - cited "personal reasons" in their resignation letters. "The players only said they will not be available for the national team," Hossain said. Bangladesh Cricket board held an urgent discussion on Sunday to discuss the resignations. Local media reports said as many as 14 Bangladesh players could quit the national team in order to join the ICL in a newly formed team based in Bangladesh.

The Indian Cricket League is a Twenty20 competition that is not recognized by the International Cricket Council, and runs in opposition to the sanctioned Indian Premier League. Players competing in the ICL therefore face potential bans from international cricket.

Shakib seals one-day cricket series win for Bangladesh: 23-January-2009
— Shakib Al Hasan grabbed 3-15 before hitting an unbeaten 33 to guide Bangladesh to a series-clinching six-wicket win in the third one-day international against Zimbabwe here on Friday. The 21-year-old left-hander justified his recent status as the top one-day all rounder as Bangladesh surpassed Zimbabwe's 119-9 with 27 balls to spare in a match reduced to 37 overs per side due to fog.
The chase did not appear easy at one time with the hosts wobbling at 89-4, but Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim (20 not out) kept their nerve to help their side clinch the three-match series 2-1.Shakib hit four fours, all against spinner Prosper Utseya, in his 36-ball knock while Rahim brought off the winning runs with a boundary off paceman Edward Rainsford.
Veteran Raymond Price was the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers, returning 2-9 off seven measly overs.Earlier, the pace-spin combination of Mashrafe Mortaza (3-26) and Shakib did the trick for Bangladesh with the duo accounting for six Zimbabwe wickets after skipper Mohammad Ashraful put the visitors in to bat.
Mortaza started the slide when he trapped opener Vusimuzi Sibanda leg-before in the very first over before returning to dismiss the next two batsmen in an inspired opening spell.Left-arm spinner Shakib rattled the visitors further by getting rid of Elton Chigumbura, Raymond Price and Rainsford in quick succession.
Off-spinner Mohammad Mahmudullah chipped in with two wickets and Rubel Hossain with one to underline yet another disciplined performance by the home team bowlers.Sean Williams, who top-scored with 59 in the previous game which the visitors lost by six wickets, offered some resistance in making 38 off 46 balls with five fours, but that was about all. Bangladesh level series:- 21-January-2009

Bangladesh levelled the three-match one-day international series against Zimbabwe with a six-wicket triumph in Mirpur.

A fine 96-run partnership between Sean Williams and captain Prosper Utseya helped the tourists recover from a poor start to reach 160 for nine from their 50 overs after being asked to bat first.

But the hosts, with Raqibul Hasan (52 not out) and opener Mehrab Hossain Jr (43) leading the way, surpassed their victory target for the loss of just four wickets and with more than five overs to spare.

Zimbabwe lost their first wicket in the ninth over when Nazmul Hossain had Hamilton Masakadza (17) caught at mid-off by Rubel Hossain.

That was a sign of things to come as wickets then began tumbling at a rapid pace. Vusi Sibanda fell for seven in the 11th over before Tatenda Taibu (three) quickly followed suit and then Zimbabwe lost Stuart Matsikenyeri (10), Elton Chigumbura (one) and Malcolm Waller (one) in the space of three overs to leave the tourists floundering on 47 for six in the 19th over.

Williams hit three fours and a six as he combined well with Utseya to repair Zimbabwe's innings before he was dismissed - run out by Mashrafe Mortaza - for 59 in the 47th over.

Utseya reached a career-best 38 before perishing in the final over, with Ray Price (seven) then bowled by Mortaza with the last ball of the innings.

Chasing just 161, Bangladesh knew they did not have to produce anything too spectacular to level the series.

Opener Tamim Iqbal was bowled between bat and pad by Tawanda Mupariwa for 21 and Mohammad Ashraful contributed only five before Ed Rainsford had him caught at short cover by Utseya, but Mehrab and Raqibul shared a 52-run stand for the third wicket to get the home side back on track.

Shakib Al Hasan (22) came in and picked up where Mehrab left off as Bangladesh inched further towards their target, with Mushfiqur Rahim (13 not out) finishing things off in style with a six over long leg off Mupariwa.

Ahead of the important semi-final Abahani are bit tensed with their pace man Nazmul Hossain who opted out the last group match due to his foot injury. On the other hand, Biman will play against Mohammedans with happy mood as they will get back their dependable all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as full fit. The number one all-rounder of the world had been suffering from a bit groin injury and did not play the last group match.

However, keeping aside all the problems every captain expected to overcome the battle of semi-final. Abahani skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortoza said his side is mixed with the experienced and young bloods, who all are enthusiastic to move into the final. "The guys are mentally fit though some injury problems arose in the last moment. But we are not totally bothered of it as we got some players who are capable of winning match from any odd situation," Mashrafe said. Mashrafe's counterpart Gazi Tank captain Mohammad Ashraful is also hopeful to win the battle. "It's a new side and we believe we can win the title. Everyone is confident about it. Our first target is to overcome Abahani.

We know they are unbeaten side in the league till now. But we have the ability to stop them," Ashraful hoped. Ashraful himself is in good form and shrugged off his recent lean patch. The skipper of the national team hopes he can continue his form. Mohammedans skipper Suhrawardi Shuvo on the other hand depends on his young guys to make the difference. "We got a young side. We've lack of experience but all have the enthusiasm to make it to final and win the trophy. Hope we can defend against Biman successfully," Shuvo said. A full fit Shakib on the other hand give Biman a solid confidence to propel high as they had little doubt to overcome Mohammedans scare. "Shakib had a bit groin injury problem but as per the advice of physio he rested in the last group match. This rest worked well for him as he became fit fully and will play the semi-final. We hope we'll overcome Mohammedan with ease," said Biman captain Sanwar Hossain. Biman, however, would not get the service of dependable middle order batsman Tushar Imran who broke his collarbone during the match against Gazi Tank.

Tushar would have to be rested as least one month which means he will miss the Premier Division Cricket League as well.

Abahani move closer to title:

Dhaka Abahani Limited successfully cross another hurdle on their way to retain the CityCell B-League title thrashing Brothers Union by 3-0 on Monday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.Abahani by virtue of this win opened up a nine points lead from their nearest rivals Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra and Dhaka Mohammedan who were jointly placed in second position with 35 points.

Defending champions Abahani now just needed a point from their remaining two matches against Russel KC and Rahmatganj to confirm their championship.Abahani's Nigerian recruit Emeka struck once in each session and Abul Hossain added the other one for the Dhanmondi outfit to further consolidate their position in the table. They brought their tally to 44 points from 18 matches. Their closest rivals Dhaka Mohammedan and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra were still dreaming to make challenge obtaining 35 points each from 17 matches.

It was also a sweet revenge for the Abahani as they suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Brothers just a month back (on December 2) in the first phase of the league. Both the Abahani and Brothers were onset with attacking strategy and it looked that the later could have gone to make it double against the champions . But Abahani took 15 minutes to shatter their ambition snatching the control of the match.

The combination of Emeka Christian and Awudu Ibrahim demolished all the Brothers tactics to establish their supremacy for maximum time of the 90 minutes game. On the other hand Brothers created a half chance in the first half and produced some pressure at the last stage. Emeka was first to make the initial threat in the 15th minute breaking the blunt defence of Brothers with a powerful shot after receiving an Abul through pass.Brothers, who had only the remarkable occasion and also the opportunity to take the advantage, which could have made the scenario of the game different but an Arup minus off a Zahid cross was saved by Samad Yusuf at the cost of corner in the 28th.

Brothers' custodian Zia, who left the ground with stretcher later on with a severe injury on his head, saved a certain effort of Emeka when the coloured hair Nigerian took a superb header on an Ibrahim cross in the 31st minute.

Emeka put Abahani into lead in the 35th minute when he was very quick to rush inside the penalty area to take a spectacular header on a Waly Faisal to send the ball top corner of the net (1-0). Abahani continuing their pressure and doubled the margin just in the stoppage time before the break. This time Abul beat Zia with a powerful right footer from the top of the box having a pass from Ibrahim (2-0).It was expected that Brothers would bounce back in the second half, but the Gopibagh outfit disappointed with their approach, as they were in back foot to restrain Abahani's attacks and concede another goal in the 86th minute.

Emeka scored his 14th goal in the league to join with Alfaz Ahmed as the top scorer with a tremendous solo effort when he ran past two defenders and the goalkeeper after receiving a ball from Mamun (3-0).Amolesh Sen, Abahani's coach in his post match reaction said, "We are now achieved 99 per cent success and one percent remaining to celebrate."About their defeat at the hands of Rahmatganj MFS in the league opener, the veteran coach said, "It was a good lesson for us, which made us very cautious for rest of the matches.

Interview with Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib up close Rabeed Imam: 24-January-2009
Man of the moment Shakib Al Hasan narrates his journey from the obscurity of a sleepy town to the highest level of international cricket:
Tell us a bit about how it all began for you-
Well I never really wanted to become a cricketer. It was only when I started touring and getting success that I thought this wasn’t too bad! I am a late starter and didn’t hold a proper cricket ball until I was about 14-15. I come from a sporting family. My father had represented Khulna Division in football and one of my cousins is also a Bangladesh international and it was only natural for me to kick the ball around and I had participated in many tournaments for boys under the height of 4 feet 10 inches. I used to play taped-tennis ball cricket in Magura and sometimes I would go into the villages with local kids to play matches on hire. It was during one of those games that I was spotted by Saddam Hossain, an umpire from our district and he asked me to come to the trial of his club team Islampur Para which played in the Magura League. I went to their nets and bowled pace for a while and then switched to spin and found that it was more effective. I was picked for the club straightaway.
The next break came when I got selected for a talent scouting camp in Narail where coaches from the BKSP (Bangladesh Institute of Sports) had come. The camp was for one month and I received formal cricket coaching for the first time there. There were 20-odd boys of my age from all over the Division and it was a great experience. I met Mash (Mashrafe bin Mortaza) for the first time there. He used to come to our training…
Did you get a chance to speak to him?
I did. He was on the verge of breaking into the national side and everyone spoke of how quick he was and how he could hit a ball from one end of the ground to the other. We watched in awe the power of his throws. He was going to be a big star and you could see that. I also remember that he would bat in the nets and balls would disappear but he just couldn’t hit me and would get really pissed. There was also one moment that still makes me laugh. We went to a picnic and Mash found a rubber band and started bullying around with it and was striking and scaring the boys. When he struck me with the band I snapped back and gave him a taste of his own medicine. I got the beating of my life after that. Mash hasn’t changed much in the last seven year (laughs).
What happened after the camp in Narail?
Obviously the coaches saw something in me and I was taken to the BKSP for a 6-month camp after which I got admitted there. It was a rude awakening for me in the first couple of months as I was kept with a group of boys who were weak in cricket. There was a cricket tournament in BKSP where four teams of the institute competed. They played on Fridays and Saturdays and all I could do was watch helplessly and then weep in private. Then one day Salah Uddin Sir (Bangladesh fielding coach Mohammad Salah Uddin), who was a BKSP coach back then, saw me watching a game and asked which team I was playing for. When he heard that I didn’t have a team he took me to another coach Hasanuzzaman Rinku and requested him to give me a chance. I played the next few games and emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the competition.
Another lucky chance did wonders for me. A bus load of us BKSP boys were taken to an Under 15 trial of the BCB to form teams. I never got a chance to bat or bowl and naturally wasn’t selected but one of the boys withdrew himself for exam or something and my name was recommended by the BKSP coaches to replace him. I played for Dhaka Metro Green and made 102 off 52 balls against Sylhet and my fortunes changed overnight.
I became a regular in the Bangladesh Under 15 side and toured India a few times. We had a lot of matches against the Cricket Association of Bengal Under 15s home and away. I was then included in the Under 17 team and played in the Asia Cup in 2004. I won a match against Sri Lanka in that competition at Visakhapatnam. We made about 178 or 179 and they were 50 in four overs. I came into bowl and took four for 16 which changed the game and we made the semifinals.
After returning home I played for Victoria Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier League and was then included in the BCB Game Development Department’s High Performance (HP) Unit. I got into the Bangladesh A team in 2005 and toured Zimbabwe. I think I took 12 wickets in the first two four-day matches against Zimbabwe A before I cut short the trip and came back to sit for the SSC exam. I played in the Under 19 World Cup in 2006 and I could feel then that my Bangladesh debut was not that far away as I was performing at every level.
What was the experience like for you of playing in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of Dhaka Premier Division league?
Your club captain Khaled Mashud has gone on record as saying that he spotted you singing while waiting to go out to bat… I didn’t feel any pressure to honest. It was just like another competition for me. I was given the opportunity at Victoria by coach Salah Uddin who was the club’s coach also. He had faith in me despite my age. I got Taka 50,000 cash on signing and was the happiest person on earth that day. In the first match my 39 was the highest score. By my fourth game the full payment had been cleared by the club. In that season I played about 10 matches and batted in every possible position, from opening to number seven. The coach experimented with me a lot (laughs).
When did you start believing that you were going to play for Bangladesh?
At the BKSP we had players who were making it into national selections even as students. Mushfiqur Rahim made his Test debut in 2005 and Shahadat (Hossain) also. For me it was a challenge. I just couldn’t rest until I got there too. These were guys who I saw everyday and could not swallow the fact that they had played for Bangladesh before me. It is not envy or jealousy but I thought I was just as good and became more determined than ever to improve my game.
You see I am a very competitive person. For example, when Rocky (Roqibul Hassan) got the man of the match award in the second ODI against Zimbabwe I kept telling myself ‘Shakib, you moron, you could have been up there today. You blew your chance’. Don’t get me wrong, I am so happy to see Roqibul, Mushfique, Mehrab (Hossain Jr.), Tamim (Iqbal) and the others performing and I am so proud of them because we have grown up as cricketers together. For me the cricket ground is a place to show my worth. I go out to field as if I’m entering the boxing ring and there’s no place for the guy who comes second best there.
What do you reckon were the turning points in your cricket career?
First it has to be the BKSP. I have always been a pretty independent type and a generally private person so the hostel life really didn’t worry me that much. There were days when I would be the only boy in the whole dormitory as the other students had gone off on a vacation and I had to stay back because of my cricket commitments. I became more disciplined and learned many virtues of life by staying there. BKSP taught me the importance of studies and I have never neglected it since.
Secondly, the now defunct HP Unit. Getting selected for the HP group was a blessing. I still think the HP Unit was the best thing to have happened to the development of Bangladesh cricket. We had the toughest possible training regime devised by Richard McInnes but even after back-breaking training we would practice on our own during the leisure time. We were that inspired. We had classes on leadership and there were speech sessions. It was a comprehensive life and cricket education package. I learned so much from it. I think I owe my fitness to the HP training.
There must be some people who have played a decisive role in your becoming a cricketer…
Ofcourse. I was never discouraged to play as a youngster. There were times though when I would skip school to play cricket or football. Only my mother would know where I was and she would not tell anyone and would always protect me if my dad found out.
I am indebted to three persons. Without their intervention I would probably be lost in the crowd and never become an international cricketer. Bappy Sir (Ashfaqul Islam Bappy, BCB Game Education Deputy Manager) is from my home town and he convinced my parents that I had a future in cricket. He was a coach at BKSP back then and he made sure that I got admitted there. For my bowling and the mental part of cricket Salah Uddin Sir has been an unbelievable mentor. He took me under his wings at the BKSP and when I got into the national side he was there too and that obviously helped.Whatever I know in batting I have learned from Fahim Sir (Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, Divisional Cricket Manager Game Development BCB). He has overseen my progress from the age level to the national team.
Also, I am grateful to all the coaches at the BKSP.
International debut as a teenager and a world star at 21. How has life changed for you?
It hasn’t changed much really. I used to have very specific times for hanging out in Magura and I would always come home before it was too late. Now most of my friends are from the circle of cricket and my childhood mates have moved to different colleges and universities and it is difficult for me to stay in touch. Also, their topics of discussion have become career oriented, some of them are in the medical college or the engineering university, and hanging out is not the same anymore because I have taken a different track. When I do return home I usually spend time with the family. I take rest, listen to music, browse the net and watch TV. I just relax when I’m not playing. I try to keep my life as private as possible and as simple as possible.
You have probably heard this query a hundred times already. What did it feel like when you learned about becoming number one in the ICC ODI rankings for all-rounders?-
It didn’t quite sink in. I was more concerned with the series decider against Zimbabwe the next day. When I went to bat in the game it was then I realized the level of expectation and I wanted to do something befitting of my status as the number one all-rounder. I am definitely proud but to be honest I have never really thought much about rankings and standings. With consistent performance the ranking automatically goes up and I believe this is one area where we need to improve a lot as a team. We have to start performing individually and as a group day in and day out.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?S
till playing cricket, definitely. Also I want to be the best cricketer I can be. We have some amazing talent in this Bangladesh side and I dream of the day when we’ll all play to our potential and rule world cricket. Most of us are very young and we are just beginning to gel. It excites me to think what fantastic things can happen to Bangladesh cricket in 10 years.

Sports in Bangldesh

Sports and games form an integral part of Bangladeshi's life. In the villages one might see a passel of kids kicking a football, or in some dusty alley one might see kids playing cricket.
Though Bangladesh is not a major sporting power in any sense, Bangladeshi athletes and sportspersons have brought her many laurels.

Besides cricket, there are many organized sports such as football, hockey, tennis, badminton, volleyball, handball, chess, carom, wrestling, weightlifting, squash, billiards and snooker. However, many of these sports are not as popular as cricket. Most of the country's sportsmen and women compete at district levels and there are university, armed forces and public sector sporting teams. In response to the country's interest in sporting activities, a large number of sporting clubs have been developed. Some of the most prominent clubs are the Dhaka Wanderers, the Abahani Krirachakra, the Dhaka Mohammedan, the Arambag, the Ajax, the Brothers Union, the Azad, the Dilkusha, the GMCC, the Muktijoddha Sangsad, the Suryatarun, the Kalabagan, the Victoria and the Wari sporting clubs. Often these clubs host national and sometimes even international tournaments, so many of their facilities are kept in the best condition possible. Overall, Bangladeshis are fond of sport and there is a good sporting infrastructure in the country.
