Ashraful retained as captain

07-February-2009

The following important decisions have been taken at the 4th Meeting of the BCB Board of Directors held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur today (Saturday).

1. The Board decided that Mohammad Ashraful will remain captain of the Bangladesh National Team until the end of Bangladesh’s Tour of the West Indies in July-August 2009. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will continue as the Team’s Vice Captain.

“We had also considered Mortaza in terms of seniority and Mushfiqur Rahim for his maturity as prospective candidates for the captaincy. Both are captaining their respective club sides in the Dhaka Premier League this season and the Board wants to give them more time to grow in the role. Their captaincy in the Premier League will be monitored and observed by the Board,” said BCB Media & Communications Committee Chairman Mohammed Jalal Yunus.

2. Review of players’ contracts and salaries is under process and the Board expects to come to a decision on the issue within a month.

3. Ticket sales proceeds from the benefit match (1st match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in the Grameenphone Tri-Nation Cup) for the Late Manzural Islam Rana has come to Taka 7,00,000.00 plus which will be handed over to Rana’s family.

4. The Board has instructed the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) to include left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak in the national Player’s Pool for the 2008-09 Dhaka League Season.

5. The Board decided to set up a Welfare Trust with an initial deposit of Taka 36 lac. Taka 26 lac will come from the BCB Sundries Fund and the rest Taka 10 lac will be generated from bat sale proceeds. Also five percent of the royalty from sponsors would be deposited in the Welfare Fund. The Trust’s beneficiaries would include current and former players, scorers and umpires, organizers and BCB staff members.

The Media & Communications Committee Chairman also informed that the Board saw a presentation from Bangladesh Coach Jamie Siddons on the team’s progress and the coach’s plans for the future. “One of the key features of the presentation was Shakib Al Hasan’s transformation with the bat over the last year. The coach showed us Shakib’s backlift when he (Siddons) first came in and his present state which is more technically correct and allows him to play shots more comfortably and freely.”

“We asked the coach about why Ashraful, Tamim Iqbal and Zunaed Siddique were not making runs and he assured us that he was working with the three batsmen and we will see positive results soon,” said Yunus.
